Creating a Profession for PLM Practitioners

The Home of Professional PLM

The PLM industry needs a recognised, worldwide professional structure for the people who work within it. The Professional PLM Initiative has been set up to fulfil this need.

The Initiative covers the whole spectrum of what it means to be 'professional' in PLM.  This will be a significant step forward, and will change the way that PLM practitioners work.

The Initiative is inclusive and interactive.  This web site shows the latest developments, and how you can get involved.

Professional PLM - How to Participate

The Initiative is working toward the formation of a new "PLM Professional" organisation that actively involves as many PLM practitioners as possible.

We are therefore offering a range of practical ways to create that involvement - and to enable PLM practitioners to get the benefits of professionalisation as early as possible.

This approach leverages the groundswell of support that has been generated by the discussions so far.  It starts by giving a key role to the PLM practitioners who want the benefits of more professionalism.  In return for their support and direction-setting, they receive useful tools and material that help them with their PLM.

Steering Group

The Steering Group provides guidance, direction and authority to the entire Professional PLM Initiative.

Working towards a worldwide PLM Profession will be a sea change for the industry as a whole.  Such a change cannot be achieved without high-level support to provide oversight, maintain momentum, and ensure the best long-term outcome.

The Steering Group is the only active platform that is specifically focused on extending professionalism in PLM.  It brings together organisations in a Round Table format to determine how PLM can be improved at an operational and an industry level.

Any future PLM Professional organisation will need to be broad-based, neutral and commercially effective. The Steering Group manages this process and oversees the development of the international parameters and structure of the profession.

Membership of the Steering Group is open to all types of PLM organisation, from every country of the world, and new Members are encouraged to join.  Its proceedings are web-based so anyone can take part, and there is a tailored induction process to enable new participants to get up to speed.

Working Group

The newly-published White Paper provides a definitive statement and rationale for a PLM Profession, but it is just a reference point.  Understanding is not the same as action.

There may be several viable ways of moving forward from here.  These need to be reviewed so that the most practicable method can be decided upon, and so that plans can be made.

A Working Group of interested organisations is being formed to do this.  Taking the White Paper as a starting point, and combining their knowledge and expertise, the participants will set the course of the next stage of the Initiative.

This is likely to be a very productive conversation that may have a long-term impact on the future direction of PLM.  If you would like to take part, let us know via the link below.

Professional PLM Associate

As a Professional PLM Associate, you benefit from the new professional material and structure as soon as it is developed by the Initiative.  The Mobilisation Pack provides career orientation, and sets the context in which to apply the neutral tools and documentation.

The monthly feed of practical working material expands the scope of available PLM options, and the neutral Body of Knowledge provides a central reference point to mainstream PLM best practice.

The Programme also enables ongong interaction with other Associates and with the PLMIG, providing an additional route for solving real PLM issues as they are encountered.

Participate

If PLM is ever to become a Profession, it will happen because PLM practitioners become tired of working in a discipline that is unrecognised and undefined, and participate in doing something positive to change the industry.

By participating in the Professional PLM Initiative, practitioners from every country and every type of organisation can be part of this change, becoming part of a community of good practice and benefiting from the new deliverables.

It is important to emphasise that the Professional PLM Initiative is truly international.  It does not matter what country you live in, or what language you speak - the future PLM Profession will be for you.  To make this happen, we need participants at all levels, and from all parts of the PLM spectrum.

You can join the Steering Group, the Working Group, or become an Associate by using the links and Forms above. If you would like more information then contact Roger Tempest via .
